 NCMH...
Offers many opportunities for you to share your talent through our Volunteer Programs. The volunteers of NCMH pride themselves on working together to provide a comforting atmosphere whether helping patients, visitors or staff. The Volunteer Service Mission is to compliment hospital staff in upholding the NCMH Mission of providing exceptional healthcare with a personal touch to all patients. Wherever volunteers are needed, they are willing to lend a helping hand.
Not only do the volunteers work within the hospital, there are some who are community volunteers. Community volunteers crochet baby coverlets, hat, booties and lap robes for our patients. The volunteers are pleased to offer the little extras that make our patients feel special. Last year the volunteers donated over 300 baby coverlets and 138 lap robes.
There are many dimensions of the NCMH Volunteer Services Program: Adult Volunteer; Community Volunteer; Student Volunteer; Volunteer Clergy. To find more information, just click on the volunteer program that interest you.
Adult Volunteers
The key to becoming a happy volunteer is to discover what you like to do, then figure out how that can benefit our Mission. Perhaps you enjoy meeting new people; if so, you may want to be a Patient Liaison or Greeter. If you like to organize, you would be perfect in an office setting. No matter what your particular skill, we will work with you to find the best place for your volunteer efforts.
Those interested in becoming hospital volunteers need to
• Submit an application (You may do this online or at the hospital)
• Interview with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services
• Have background and reference check
• Meet with Employee Health
• Attend Orientation
Community Volunteer
Community Volunteers help with crocheting or knitting baby coverlets and lap robes. Yarn is supplied for those who need it. To be a part of the community volunteers, just call Angela Bowers at 803-405-7130.
We also benefit from the Linus Project. If you quilt or would like to make blankets for the Linus Project, we will gladly accept them on their behalf.
Student Volunteer
• Job Shadowing – Job shadowing is available for students ages 14 – 20. Job shadowing offers the opportunity for students to view a particular job/area within the hospital for 3 hours. There is required paperwork in order to participate. You may sign up through your counselor at school or call Angela Bowers at 405-7130. All students job shadowing during school hours must be approved through the school.
• Service Learning/Internship – Service Learning/Internship is an opportunity for high school students to work at NCMH during a class period for a semester and receive credit for that class. Students sign up through the School-to-Work program. Paperwork and Orientation is required to be a part of this program.
• Junior Volunteer Program – The Junior Volunteer Program is our summer program for students age 14 – 20. The program is for seven weeks in the summer in which the student works in one department the entire time. Skills are learned quickly and the staff enjoys the helping hands. Students must submit an application during the months of February and March to be a part of this program. Orientation is scheduled in May and the students are ready for work in June and July. There is limited space and attendance at Orientation is mandatory. This is an excellent program for those desiring to go into the healthcare field.
Volunteer Clergy
Our volunteer clergy program is in conjunction with Interfaith Community Service. Local Pastors sign up through ICS to serve NCMH. Pastors take call for one week at a time throughout the year. The Pastor makes himself/herself available in case of emergencies when families request a Pastor as well as minister to our patients in the hospital. If you are a Pastor and interested in serving NCMH, please call Angela Bowers at 405-7130 or Pastor John Weaver at 276-1009.
