Hospital Marketing Campaign Highlights Expert Surgeons Plus Convenience and Safety

Newberry County Memorial Hospital (NCMH) has launched a big marketing push for its surgical services. The campaign will stress the expertise of its surgeons along with the convenience, safety and patient-friendly attitude of the hospital via television, newspaper ads and of course, the Internet.

According to NCMH marketing director Andy Hawkins, the hospital offers significant advantages for patients facing surgery. First and foremost are the community's surgeons, all ten of whom are board certified.

"We are fortunate in that we have orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, OB-GYN doctors who perform women's surgery, plus urology and ear, nose and throat specialists," Hawkins explains. "We also have anesthesiologists available 24/7, so regardless of when a patient needs surgery, the appropriate pain management is provided by a medical doctor."

NCMH surgeons offer patients the latest in surgical techniques such as laparoscopic surgery—sometimes called "band-aid" surgery—which requires very small incisions so recovery time is quick. Laparoscopic procedures are used to repair torn cartilage in knees and shoulders and to address conditions like diverticulitis (a digestive disorder) and appendicitis.

Convenience is a major message of the marketing campaign. At larger hospitals, it can take weeks and sometimes months to get surgery scheduled. At NCMH, most surgeries are scheduled in days. "Patients are surprised at how quickly we can get their surgery scheduled," says Kathy STroud, RN, OR Clinical Director. "Waiting can be stressful, and we are mindful of that."

Another point the campaign will make is that patients can literally park at the door and walk a few steps to the Fulmer Surgery Center or to hospital Admissions for inpatient surgery. And with patient safety in mind, the campaign will highlight NCMH's stellar infection control performance: the risk of getting an infection is less than one in a thousand versus the national average of one in 20.

"Our focus is patient safety and quality healthcare," says Dr. Oscar Lovelace, a local Family Practice doctor who serves as NCMH's chief of medical staff. "The Newberry community is fortunate to have the choice to stay here in Newberry for surgery, where it’s convenient, patient friendly and safe.”
